Catering for a population of over 1.3 billion with over 95 per cent per cent literacy, the Chinese book market is the largest in the world by volume, and the second largest in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), after that of the USA. In 2013/14 the US market was estimated (Rüdiger Wischenbart, Global Trends in Publishing, 2014) to be worth $39 billion at consumer prices or 26 per cent of the world total; the Chinese market was estimated to be worth $18.7 billion or almost 13 per cent.
This new report by Paul Richardson and Chu Xiaoying explores in depth the Chinese book market and the opportunities it holds for UK publishers.
